Writerly Resolution for 2024 – Avoid disturbing your creative seeds
My favourite quote to get the year started comes from Orna Ross (the founder of the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) in her new Creative Planning Workbook for Poets & Authors. Based on Orna’s advice I’m going to kick back more in 2024 and let my subconscious do the work.
‘Your conscious mind likes to think it makes things happen but actually the subconscious does 90 percent of the work. So being too determined or driven, taking a controlling approach, getting anxious about “progress”, trying to force the pace, has the opposite effect. Just as it would if you pulled a seed out of the ground to see if it had germinated yet. The creative way is to harness the power of the subconscious mind.‘ – Orna Ross
So right now I’m envisioning my subconscious lying in a hammock, while a tropical sun shower gently waters my creative seeds.
But I’m not kidding myself that that will get my next book written. I still need the discipline to turn up to the page, to limit my scrolling, to show up, to be courageous – but it makes me smile to know it’s okay to indulge in some dreamy delay too.
2024 is the year my subconscious gets its time in the sun.
NB: I am a long time member of ALLi and an ambassador, as well as the non-fiction book advisor to ALLi. I love this organisation and all it has done for indie authors and I also include affiliate links to ALLi on this page that may or may not result in me receiving a small amount if you join too. Cheers.
