Write a Book, Reboot your Reach and Help More People

April 21, 2026

What if your expertise could reach more people than the ones you can work with in person?

Marie-France Laval has spent years helping families navigate the very real stress of fussy eating. Her new book (out May 6, 2026), The Fussy Eater Reboot, extends that reach in book form: science-backed, doable, encouraging, and with all of Marie-France’s expertise and unique insights.

And what about that cover!? I love it because it’s different from other books on the subject in the most positive, refreshing way. It’s welcoming, not judgy; doesn’t overwhelm with foodstuffs or try and pinpoint a specific food or child age; and it shows how a reader will feel after they read, understand and implement the wisdom in the book.

I had the privilege of working with Marie-France as her book coach on this project, and the learning went both ways, so if you have a picky eater in your life (or know someone who does!) this book will change mealtimes for the better.

And if you’re a consultant or coach, and you care deeply about your subject like Marie-France, the process of writing a book for publication not only helps you reach more people than you can 1:1, but when done well, will also:

  • Deepen your own expertise through the research and writing process
  • Sharpen and refine your thinking by articulating what you know clearly and completely…and I’ve also found, you’ll likely come up with cool new ideas too!
  • Expand your network (and improve your book!) by reaching out to other specialists for interviews, contributions, and endorsements
  • Build your reputation and the trust people have in you before they even meet you
  • Open doors to speaking, media, events and advisory opportunities that just wouldn’t exist otherwise.

So, if you’re a specialist sitting on expertise you’re passionate about and that people need, it might be time to open that laptop and start outlining what you want to share.

And for me, as an author coach and mentor, one thing I especially love about books is how they help you meet a person where they are in terms of need, readiness, and budget.

What does this look like?

Free: Someone just beginning to explore a topic (in Look-It’s Your Book!‘s case, publishing a non-fiction book; or in Marie-France’s case, finding help for a fussy eater) might want to read around it before booking a 1:1 consult. That’s what I do too; for example, I’ll read a zillion books on useful plants but then might ask for some expert help when it comes to designing how they will all work together. Borrowing a book from a library makes great sense at this stage, and if the book isn’t already in the collection, members can request it.

Free: Blog posts and podcasts are another way people can access the info. And if you’ve done the thinking that goes into a book, you’ll have plenty of content for both.

Low cost: A paperback or ebook, available from their favourite retailer or direct from the author. Like, seriously…good books offer immense value for the cost!

Workshops: Where people interested in the same subject come together, splitting the cost of learning something that matters to them (like my workshops for libraries, Writing NSW – May 2 is the next one!, Byron Writers Festival and others).

Courses and communities: Where people can learn at their own pace through an on-demand course and/or connect with others on the same journey through an ongoing membership community.

Speaking: Where you bring the message to an audience all at once such as a keynote, a panel, a conference or festival session. And hopefully, enjoy some bulk book sales!

1:1 Consulting: Bespoke support, tailored to someone’s situation, goals, style, budget and need for momentum and results.

A book is where the foundation and expertise you’ve built is strengthened further while also bringing you to a whole new audience. The Fussy Eater Reboot is a wonderful example of that.

Congrats Marie-France! You can purchase a copy for your family and friends here or ask your library or bookstore to get you a copy (release date May 6), it’s also available online.
