Why Authors Need to Think Like Marketers

Why Authors Need to Think Like Marketers

August 9, 2026

‘A book is not just a product to launch; it is a body of thinking that can keep working for you long after publication. Write it well, shape it strategically, and it can open doors to articles, speaking, collaborations, media and opportunities far bigger than book sales alone.’

Andrew Griffiths and I always enjoy good conversations about books and marketing (book and marketing nerdery will do that to you!), which is why it was so fun joining him on his The Business of Being an Author podcast recently.

In the episode “Why Authors Need to Think Like Marketers” we talk about why so many books fail, including the simple fact that some are written for the author instead of the reader. We also get into why smart marketing starts long before launch day.

Andrew was in the reverse hot seat too, when I interviewed him for the Self-Publishing with ALLi podcast about the process behind his own book. That episode, Bulk Book Sales & Strategic Gifting, is worth a listen too for some of the book marketing strategies he employs for his own titles.

Happy listening, writing and publishing!

Bestest, Anna
