How to keep your non-fiction fresh

How to keep your non-fiction fresh

July 31, 2024

Stagnant. Seen it before. Slow. Stodgy.

Not the kind of book you want to be known for huh!?

What if you could add some extra zing to your non-fiction manuscript? What if you could embed freshness in it, not just in the writing, but in the planning and marketing stages too?

I devour books for personal and professional reasons, but as one of the shortlist judges of The Australian Books Awards I also read and rate books I might not normally pick up. But even though I’m reading in subject areas that may not be on my normal reading list, I can always tell a standout book. How? Because it has that something extra. And that something is: freshness.

A great non-fiction book has:

  • fresh information
  • a fresh approach
  • a fresh perspective
  • fresh content
  • fresh writing style and voice

In Episode 249 of the IndyAuthor Podcast, I speak with the wonderful Matty Dalyrymple about ways non-fiction authors can freshen up their book idea and execute it in a way that will make readers take notice.
