Author Marketing – Byron Writers Festival Workshop
Of all the things authors struggle with, it seems that marketing ourselves and our work is often at the top of our list. But, it doesn’t need to be so hard…it can even be fun!
For the second year in a row I’m running a Marketing for Writers workshop at Byron Writers Festival. One of last year’s attendees, Maggie Walters, has since gone on to successfully market her debut memoir SPLIT including receiving national media coverage, library author talk invitations, bookstore signings, excellent sales and much more!
The workshop is not just for fiction and non-fiction (and soon-to-be) authors, but also for freelance writers, poets, screenwriters and anyone who wants to open up opportunities to continue to create.
Even if you are mind-bindingly brilliant and your work gorgeously crafted, it doesn’t automatically mean you will sign a book contract, win a grant, be supported by bookstores, earn media coverage, be commissioned for articles or be ‘known’. And just because your book is great, it doesn’t mean it will be read.
That’s why it’s so important for writers to understand marketing – and apply it!
In this workshop I’ll share real-world examples of creative author and book marketing, challenge the idea that marketing needs to be a slog, and brainstorm ideas about your goals, where you are now and how to get you to where you want to – or need to – be.
Publishing is a super competitive landscape, there are plenty of excellent creators and an unending supply of content. But when you know your values and lean into your talents, marketing becomes less of a thorn in your side and more a natural sharing of your unique approach and creativity.
