Australian Society of Authors: Publishing Consultancy Service
On its website, The Australian Society of Authors (ASA) states, “The ASA is here for all Australian writers and illustrators – aspiring, emerging, and established.” And my experience of the organisation over my writing years, from a fledgling with a pen to an author of five books and counting (a mix of trad and indie/self-published), has borne that out.
I’ve benefitted from the ASA’s advocacy for Lending Rights – including their most recent success in compensating authors for digital lending of our books.
I’ve referred companies who have wanted me to freelance for them, as well as organisations that book me for speaking gigs, in-conversations and workshops, to the ASA’s recommended rates of pay – it’s a great reminder to self of the value of creative work too!
I’ve embarked on an adrenalin-charged Literary Speed Dating session resulting in my manuscript being requested by a publisher.
I’ve turned to them for wisdom, guidance and collective support and action during the recent unauthorised use of one of my books to train AI.
And I’ve made the most of ASA resources, services, newsletters and courses over the years, including hosting some myself on book marketing and self-publishing. Access to these are are benefits of ASA membership, and I think deciding to join the ASA is about being part of something bigger than self too – it’s not just about how the ASA can help your learning and career, but it’s also about supporting other writers right now, and all the other Australian authors yet to come.
I’m also delighted, that in a full circle moment, and on the basis of my industry experience, independence, and track record in author mentoring, I’ve been invited to and am able to assist as a publishing consultant for the ASA and fellow members.
